New Year's Letter from SCC President Tukey

Dear College Club Members: Welcome to the new year of 2021!! May it bring solutions to the world's pandemic woes and opportunities for all to reunite with family and friends in safety. Our hope for the New Year is that Covid-19 will be brought under control through vaccinations and we will be able to resume in-person meetings and activities.

2020 has been a remarkable year for SCC/AAUW, pandemic notwithstanding. We've been able to have several virtual programs on the 100th anniversary of the woman's suffrage movement which culminated in Janice Harris Jackson's on Stony the Road We Trod in November about black suffragists. We also can't forget the wonderful presentation by Jee-Hoon Krska on Keys2Success. For all who attended our mini Gala 100th Anniversary meeting in November, we thank you. It was a great success!! In December, we had an informal Holly Berry Zoom call. We presented our newest members to SCC. I am amazed at the wide knowledge and experiences we hold as members. With the first month of the New Year already behind us, it's time to look ahead to the programs scheduled for the spring of 2021. Even thought it's anticipated that Covid-19 vaccination efforts will be well underway by late spring, for the safety and comfort of all members, Board meetings and some activities will be virtual for the foreseeable future.

I feel I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the historic election of the first female Vice President of the United States. As we also consider the additional barriers to equity faced by women of color, it is equally momentous that the Vice President is the first Black individual or South Asian descent to hold the second highest office in the country. I think we have indeed witnessed a crack in the proverbial glass ceiling.

With the New Year comes the Branch's election of officers for 2021-2023. My term as President will be ending and a brands new Board will be elected to run SCC. Being a part of the Board is incredibly important and rewarding. It's not too early to start thinking about what you would like to do to be part of SCC leadership.

Thank you all for everything that you do to contribute to the life of our branch. Best wishes for a healthy and happy 2021. -- Hedy Tukey, President
